Set on Avenue Diagonal – the main artery that crosses the city, in Les Corts district, next to Pedralbes and a few minutes walk from Pavilions Güell, the Hotel Sofia is undoubtedly one of the most serene places to stay in Barcelona. Originally named after Princess Sofia, wife to the former King of Spain Juan Carlos I, the hotel is a symbol of glamour and luxury.
By approaching the hotel we were greeted by park La Maternitat, a historical site full of charm with Modernista pavilions and numerous species of trees, such as tall date palms and probably the tallest magnolia tree in Barcelona.
The moment we entered the lobby we were drawn to the immense creativity of the MOEM interior designer studio, that made an architectural statement right from the entrance. They created an explosion of diamonds, triangle mirrors dispersed all over the high celling, that in a way represent an abstract work of art. That just drew our view so high, and gave us the sense of space. The combination of natural wood, glass and lights creates an impression of modernity with a warm feeling to it.
In the lobby, the palette of colors ranges from dark grey, brown, beige to bronze and gold; and when you touch the materials of the sofas, you feel the softest velvet. Palms are scattered all over the place, but real heaven and haven is by the pool. But we will come to that later.
Since we arrived a bit earlier to check into our “Grand suite,” attentive staff welcomed us to Philosofia book café- boulangerie and pastry shop. With more than 5,000 books on its shelves, Philosofia is a peaceful place where you may surrender to a good story or just your thoughts, and plan your day, because Barcelona awaits for you.
Philosofia book café
First let us introduce you to “our” “Grand suite.” We called one of the four elevators and, like everything in this hotel, we noticed attention to detail that separate the good from the great, things that showed us this is not an ordinary place. The elevator is spacious, mirror-lined, meticulously clean, there are no stops in between, and just in a few seconds we were on the 18th floor.
Every aspect of the hotel’s interior was carefully considered.
Our suite was one of the best we have experienced. It has a large entry area, a bar and an oval-table for four people, a living room with an L-shaped bed, glass coffee table, TV and a work-desk with our favorite Marshal speaker.
Living room in a soft contemporary style, which is the design theme for the whole suite.
This 80sqm suite also comprises a bedroom with plush king bed and the second TV, a spacious bathroom with a bathtub and separate showers and a grand walk-in closet that could make Carrie Bradshaw jealous. The carpet represents a true abstract design, filled with colors of dark blue, mustardy-yellow, brown, and mixed with off-white and cream. The complete look of the suite is modern and luxurious. We knew we would more than enjoy our stay here.
The ultimate indulgence, this Grand Suite takes things to the next level.

The incredibly spacious and bright bathroom with a custom-designed vanity
The view from the suites is just one of the pleasures of staying in this luxurious hotel. We can never get tired of the view overlooking the city.
The hotel has 465 rooms in total, of which 50 are suites: 18 Top Suites and 32 Junior Suites, all located on the 17th and 18th floors. The exquisitely decorated designer rooms, which are furnished in premium materials combined with the best luxury furniture brands, are all equipped with Natura Bissé amenities.
Junior suite, which offers a large open space featuring a living room, in addition to a spectacular bathroom with a bathtub and modern touches.
All suites feature views of Barcelona and use of the privileged “As You Wish” services, which include amenities such as a 24-hour butler, welcome gifts, access to the Wish Lounge serving daily cocktails and delicacies and other personal offerings.
Sofia circular bar, with a gold palm-leaf mural on the ceiling, is the perfect location to start the evening with one of its signature Cava-based Bellini’s.
Dazzling Sofia circular Bar crowned with a gold-leaf palm redefines a concept of opulent interior.
The IMPAR restaurant was designed with the purpose of becoming the culinary and social meeting point for people in Barcelona. Chef Carles Tejedor and interior designer Jaime Beriestain have worked together as IMPAR consultants. For the restaurant, Beriestain opted for a color range that includes the pebble, alabaster, gold and frost. Spread out over more than 600 m2, it is a place to enjoy creative culinary offerings that are made with fresh and locally sourced Mediterranean ingredients with tributes to the cuisine of different countries.
IMPAR‘s interior, a modern take on traditional Parisian bistros
Impar is the perfect place to have a quiet breakfast, especially at the outdoors terrace. Every day from 7.00 AM to 10:30 AM they serve breakfast buffet with everything that you could wish for: barista-made coffee, croissants, Iberian ham, wide selection of cheeses, fresh fruits, smoothies and juices, eggs and pancakes prepared on sight. It’s superb, and it’s something you wouldn’t want to skip.
In the evening the garden is lightened with many small bulbs, which sets the perfect tone for a romantic dinner. We enjoyed a unique gastronomical experience with diverse culinary options and Catalan-inspired dishes with explosion of flavors, aromas and textures.
The terrace and outdoor gardens
A haven in the heat of Barcelona
Sofia’s outdoor pool surrounded by lounge sets with a private urban lush garden is a place that you long for in this bustling city. It is only accessible to hotel guests.
By the pool, you may order starters to share, like potato chips, Cesar salad, Buffalo stracciatella with tomatoes and watercress pesto, Salmon carpaccio with nori seaweed and citrus mayonnaise or Mac and cheese with prawns, Tandoori chicken sandwich with coleslaw and spiced Greek yogurt, Longline hake with citrus oil, among many delicious options.
While lying by the pool, we opted for the chilled wine La Charla with, expressive aroma of white fruit, pear or melon, and sometimes Pazo de San Mauro also fruity with rich floral and citrus nuances. If you are not up to wine during the day, we find mocktails just divine. Our choice Virgin Pina Colada or Tropical Summer!
Sofia’s large outdoor pool area with comfortable sun loungers is a true oasis for relaxation.
An unforgettable spa experience
An elegant, Mediterranean-inspired SOFIA Oasis Wellness & Spa spread over 1100sqm, with three pools heated to different temperatures, sauna, salt cave, showers, massage rooms, as well as a vast array of body and beauty treatments. There is also a sun deck with views of the small tropical garden.
Sofia also has a 24-hours gym with state-of-the-art equipment and natural light from the huge windows overlooking the garden. There is an option to practice Yoga in the morning.
Being part of Sofia’s world, conferred on us a level of extravagant living and a proximity to wealth and history that was overwhelming, exhilarating and fun. Sofia is not an ordinary 5-star hotel; she is like the most beautiful, thoughtful, intelligent and caring woman. Her beauty is breathtaking, but also inviting. You wouldn’t want to leave her, even if you know that Gaudí, Picasso, and Dalí are awaiting for you.
