Italian top model and one of the sexiest men according to models.com, Fabio Mancini, began his modelling career on the Giorgio Armani runway, before becoming an iconic face of the brand after several campaigns and shows. He has walked for numerous designers including Dolce & Gabbana, Dolce & Gabbana Alta Sartoria, Vivienne Westwood, Dirk Bikkembergs, Ermanno Scervino, Brioni and many more. In the exclusive interview for Fashionela he talks about his successful collaborations with fashion house Giorgio Armani, beauty and fitness regimes and general lifestyle.
How you were discovered and how your modeling career started?
My modeling career started not so long ago, about four and a half years. I was scouted by an agent while I was walking the streets of Milan. He immediately sent me to the offices of Giorgio Armani and that’s how I started this beautiful journey.
How did your career develop from that point?
Not only my career, but my complete life changed so fast. Since I started modeling, I traveled a lot and the biggest agencies in the world wanted to represent me. A kind of dream that I never expected to come true, because I started later than the most models, but I understand that everyone have a different career start and I am definitely taking one step at a time.
What is the most satisfying part of modeling for you? What kind of projects are you primarily passionate about?
Traveling and meeting new people every day, with different ways of life, different cultures and food. I love to broad the horizons of my life, love to see people that think in different way and I respect all. My biggest passion is traveling and I am very lucky because I can make money with my job while experiencing something that everyone would like to do.
You must be very excited about your collaborations with Armani. Tell us a little about it. What’s next for you?
Work for the biggest one in the fashion industry like Mr. Giorgio Armani is a dream come true. He is not an ordinary fashion designer. He doesn’t just draw his collection, he dreams on it, especially inspired by what life gave to him. An extraordinary person and a piece of my heart, because he believed in me when I started, as he does now after all these years. Being Italian and working with Mr. Giorgio Armani is the biggest satisfaction that any model can have and I am definitely lucky.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I was the face of Armani’s collections for many years, seven campaigns to be precise, including Emporio Armani, Emporio Armani underwear and Armani Jeans, which I consider a great achievement. And my last season was really successful. I did 14th consecutive runway show for Giorgio Armani and Emporio Armani, never missing a season! And I don’t intend to stop…

Who is your favorite photographer? Why?
I have many favorite photographers, but the ones that perfectly reflect my way of life are Peter Lindbergh, Patrick De Marchelier and Bruce Weber. They are definitely my favorite ones.
Tell us something about your exercise regime.
I don’t have specific exercise regime, because I travel a lot and it is really difficult to establish a classic routine. I was a swimmer for many years and I played football, so now it’s easy for me to stay in form. I love to run in open parks and I hate gym.
When models say they eat healthy, what do they mean by that?
People in general don’t know a lot about good food and a good diet. Diet doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t eat certain food. It is a way of life, because everyone has a different metabolism and we need to listen to our body. For me, eating healthy means to be happy with what I eat and transforming the food in the fuel for my body when I do sports. (laughs)
Any beauty tips or secrets you’ve learned through modeling?
Patience. This is my secret. Everyone has a different body, face and characteristics. It is important never to get too disappointed if a casting went bad. Just believe in yourself and your time will come, maybe not now… but definitely soon.
How would you describe your style?
My style is a mix of my traditions. My father is Italian, my mother has origins from India and I love to create a mix of clothes from Indian culture and vintage ones. I love vintage shops and I don’t like to follow influencers and trendy people.
How do you balance your personal life and your career?
I usually don’t speak about fashion when I am with my family, or with my friends. I mostly speak of everything but fashion! The secret that works for me is to separate these two things. That gives me the perfect balance inside.
What was the best advice ever given to you?
To believe in myself and to never forget where I came from, who were the people that had been there when I wasn’t a model, and who are the ones who tried to get in my way. What goes around comes around, Karma always comes back in life, and that is my biggest advice.
How do you feel fashion has empowered you?
I am not really a fashion addict. I mean, I work in fashion, but I can live without it. This is only a great opportunity that life gave to me, a great story to say to my children one day…
Do you have any advice for boys who want to get into modeling?
Hard work in the first place, followed by much luck. You need to understand and know your limits, where you can push and where you cannot. Being handled by good management and having a manager who really believes in you is really helpful, and the rest will come in time if YOU really believe in yourself! I have to say thanks to that angel who watch over me from the sky, Massimo Curella, the first person who believed in me and, of course, Giorgio Armani. Also, I have to say thanks to my current managers, Massimo Festari with the great assistance from Simon Smith, Martina Vanzin and Marco and all the D’Management group, in particular Christian because he had a lot of patience to take care of my image on the Internet…

It is not a secret that social media such as Instagram are as important as building up professional portfolio these days. Some of the most famous models are well-known for sharing their private life on social services to gain more fans and contracts. How do you feel about social media?
I adore Instagram, because it is direct! Sometimes images speak for themselves and you don’t need many words. I love to answer to my followers when I have time. I really don’t care too much about the famous models in social media, because some of them have millions of followers and they never did important shows at the fashion weeks and ad campaigns as well! So my opinion is never to look how many followers a person has because you never know if they’re real ones or not…. I have the great fortune to have a small team of girls that are helping me to manage the social media part- Facebook fan page and blog. I want to say a special thanks to Francesco and especially Nancy, who does an amazing job for me!
