Chanel invites Jean-Paul Goude to celebrate the magic of the holiday season. A loyal contributor to the House for nearly thirty years, he immerses us in an artistic world filled with joy and a touch of fantasy, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Chanel ambassador and face of N°5 L’Eeu.
“By nature, a film dedicated to the holiday season conveys poetry, magic, joy and surprise. Jean-Paul Goude’s work combines humor and enchantment with an offbeat style. Choosing his creative world filled with timeless, childlike wonder was an obvious choice,” explains Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Head of Global Creative Resources for Chanel Fragrance & Beauty and Watches & Fine Jewelry.
“I loved playing the character created by Jean-Paul. The joy and wonderment reminded me of how I felt as a little girl on Christmas morning,” remembers Lily-Rose Depp.
Wearing a little dress, fingerless gloves and red boots, her hair crimped in a 1940s style and tucked beneath a white beret, Lily-Rose Depp exudes fresh, youthful charm. “For me, Lily-Rose incarnates the freshness and vivacity of a young girl, mixed with the maturity of a seasoned actress,” explains Jean-Paul Goude. Seated on a giant fragrance bottle, the young actress gazes into a large snow globe like a fortune-teller divining the future. “I see, I see…” Among the pile of gifts, she discovers her lucky number, N°5, along with her favorite fragrance, N°5 L’Eau. Lily-Rose Depp dances with childlike joy in the swirling snow; suddenly, the atmosphere transforms into a Broadway musical enlivened by the young woman’s ultra-modern spirit.
“Playing on this quirky style while following the rules of the game — the holiday season in this case — is one of his many talents,” continues Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur.
“With this film, we wanted an experienced actress to play a purely commercial message in a natural and spontaneous way, something that Lily-Rose accomplished brilliantly,” adds Jean-Paul Goude.
A compliment that Lily-Rose Depp returns: “Every experience with Jean-Paul Goude is a new adventure, driven by his immense and unbelievable creativity. With Jean-Paul, we create characters and have a lot of fun with them.”
The ties between Chanel and Jean-Paul Goude are woven into each piece of the decor and the smallest detail. The oversized fragrance bottle is a key feature of Chanel advertising campaigns, but it is also part of the director’s creative signature: the artist had the three- meter-high bottle specially created for the film, along with the giant double C in the background to heighten the magic of his story without having to use special effects. Augmenting reality as opposed to virtuality to create an amplified sense of magic is one of Jean-Paul Goude’s favorite techniques.
While the touches of red on Lily-Rose Depp’s accessories and the Chanel name recall the lively colors of Jean-Paul Goude, they are also a nod to the longstanding tradition at Chanel of slipping this hue into its iconic fragrance campaigns… They are also a tribute to the “color of life, the color of blood” in the words of Gabrielle Chanel, as well as to the femininity, passion and daringness embodied by Lily-Rose Depp.
With this new campaign set to roll out on November 1st 2019, Chanel has composed an ideal and enchanting world, the perfect setting in which to celebrate one of the most beautiful and festive times of the year.
